8 health tips to try this winter
Posted on May 06 2019
With the chilly temperatures outside, getting that summer bod isn’t exactly on the top of our to-do lists…heck it doesn’t even crack top 10. We would much rather choose a cuddly blanket and cup of tea over a sweat sesh at the gym and cold salad. So I’ve devised a list of quick tips that are easy to remember and will have you looking great when winter ends. Here are some fun, low maintenance health tricks to try out-no gym required!
- When life gives you lemons…
Adding some lemon juice or a slice of lemon to a warm cup of water is life changing! Not only does it taste refreshing and keep you warm, it’s also hydrating, skins boosting and gives you a boost of vitamin C during flu season. I haven’t even mentioned the best part: it’s 9 calories per glass and the warm water plus lemon magic assists in stabilizing your weight and promoting weight loss. So what are you waiting for?
- Take the stairs:
When you have the opportunity to incorporate a little exercise into your daily life, don’t avoid it. By this I mean: take the stairs, park far away from the store entrance or take your shopping bags in two at a time and work those arms! During winter we become so sedentary, so now’s your chance to add a little something to your heart rate during your day-to-day.
- The secret ingredient is…
Have you ever heard about the apple cider and cumin pepper diet? You add them to water and drink up-it tastes terrible! What doesn’t taste terrible is cumin on it’s own as a spice and not punishment. When you’re cooking try to substitute pepper with cumin. It stabilises your blood pressure, blood sugar levels (so you don’t crave anything) and it’s filled with yummy anti-oxidants. Happy cooking!
- You’re feeling sleepy…
Not a hypnotist’s trick, but rather a habit you should look into. The average person should get between 7-9 hours of sleep a night. If you don’t sleep you crave more food and can consume up to an extra 300 calories per sleepless day without realising it. Besides the black rings under your eyes, sleeplessness also slows down your metabolism. So set your bedtime and get that (literal) beauty sleep.
- Water you gonna do about it?
The most important ingredient to any health/beauty/weight-loss kick is water! You should be drinking around 2 litres of water a day! Not only does it fill you up, and make your skin crystal clear and beautiful, it also detoxes your system and cleans it out! Are you going to pee a lot? Yes! But will you look amazing with a healthy water routine in your life? Double yes!
- Work it out:
I know, I know! I said no gym, but I didn’t say anything about a home workout or yoga sessions. Exercise is good! It gets rid of toxins, and it tones you up and promotes weight-loss. If you don’t have the time (or energy) to fit in a full work-out then pop a squat while you’re waiting for dinner to cook or download a quick, fun 10 minute YouTube workout. Anything to get that body moving and that heart pumping!
- Plate up:
Did you know it’s healthier to have 5-6 small meals in a day than 3 large meals with zero snacks in between? The reason for this is that the small portions fill you up and keep your metabolism going all day long, whereas the big meals are often too filling and are at awkward times. Also remember to listen to your body: eat when you’re hungry, stop when you’re fill and try to choose healthier options. Yes this is an excuse to buy that extra tub of hummus.
- Just Dance:
That’s right, going dancing with your girlfriends can be a great workout. Putting a proper boogie into it can burn up to 200-600 calories per hour (and maybe a hot guy’s number.) Heading to groove town also strengthens your body, improves flexibility and can be fantastic cardio, just skip the sugary drinks beforehand and party on.
So there are your 8 quick healthy winter tips that you can totally incorporate into your daily life. With minor changes and major results if you stick to them-you’ll be looking super cute when summer comes around. Until then stay warm and stay active!
